Every anaesthetist in Australia is a doctor first. They are graduates from medical schools.
Specialist Anaesthetists have to undertake many years of further study and training. They are very well schooled in medicine, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. They are also intensively trained in the practical skills and procedures necessary in providing anaesthetics of the highest quality and safety. After completing the required years of training and practical experience, they have to pass a number of examinations before they are recognised as specialists by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. With this qualification, they are then accepted by the Federal Health Department as specialists anaesthetists.
