Fluid Therapy

During the anaesthetic, most patients will require some intravenous fluid therapy.  This is to rehydrate you after you have been fasting for a time.  Fluids are also be needed to support your heart and circulation.

After the operation, IV fluids may also be needed if you experience nausea and vomiting as you will not be able to drink and retain fluids.  After some types of surgery, you may not be able to eat and drink.  In these cases, IV fluid therapy will also be required.

The IV fluids will be stopped when you are able to drink adequate amounts of liquids.
