Common Problems

Although anaesthetics have come a long way, certain side effects

are still common.  These can usually be adequately managed.

Nausea & Vomiting

Even though modern anaesthetic drugs are very good, nausea

and vomiting are still common problems after surgery.  It is

usually the pain medications which cause nausea and vomiting but other medications such as antibiotics can also be responsible.  Nausea and vomiting is not usually dangerous but are very unpleasant experiences. They can be managed with anti-vomiting medications.  Unfortunately, nausea and vomiting can occasionally, be very difficult to prevent or treat.

Although pain medications can cause nausea and vomiting, it is may still be necessary to have the pain medications as excessive pain may affect your recovery.  Dr Lim will prescribe anti-nausea medications which can be very effective.

There are a few different types of anti-nausea medications available.  It is often a matter of trial and error to see which medication works best to settle your nausea and vomiting.  If you start to feel nauseated, please contact the nurses early.

It is also better to only have small amounts of food and fluids in the post-operative period.  Large amounts of drink and food can start vomiting.

Sedation

It is common to be a bit sleepy for a time after the anaesthetic.  This is from a combination of anaesthetic drugs and pain medications.

The nurses will administer oxygen via a plastic mask or nasal prongs if you are too sleepy.
