Transfusions and Blood Products
We are very lucky that blood products are very safe in Australia. The blood banks only accept donations from volunteers who are all vigorously screen to be free from infections. In addition, the donated blood is thoroughly tested and then stored under optimal conditions. The blood products are then adminstered under very strict regulations. This is all to have the safest blood products in the world.
Even with the safety measures, Dr Lim is very cautious with blood products and transfusions. However, there are still times when patients will need blood products and transfusions. Dr Lim will recommend that you have these treatments only when there is no other alternative.
If you have a religious or any other objections to these treatments, please discuss this with Dr Lim during the pre-anaesthetic assessment.
