General Anaesthetics

This is what most people think about when it comes to having an anaesthetic.

Dr Lim will use the IV to administer the anaesthetic drugs which will send you into a controlled sleep.  Your breathing and your heart will be closely monitored by the anaesthetic machine.  Intravenous fluids will be given to rehydrate your body.

When the operation is completed, Dr Lim will wake you up and transfer you to the care of the recovery nurses.  Once you are stabilized, you will then be transfered to the day procedure unit if it is just day surgery or to the ward if you are an inpatient.

Local anaesthetics are often injected by the surgeon before you wake up.  Nerve blocks, spinals or epidurals may be required to manage your pain after surgery.
